Project Overview:
K & D Joinery were appointed to manufacture seventeen new solid Oak shop fronts and two solid Sapele shop fronts as part of the longest façade retention project in London. These magnificent shop fronts were part of the original 13 building wide elevation in Knightsbridge Gate London SW1, designed by the Architect William D. Caroe, and built in 1902.
The surveying of this Grade II listed façade proved extremely challenging as much of the original joinery included hand carved detailing and intricately designed mouldings. There were thirty-six circular oak windows to manufacture and thirty-six glazed oak doors. Large deep cornices with dental moulding details, curved arches, plinths and pediments all of which had to be carefully manufactured to match the original design exactly.
All components were stained and sealed in our spray shops to the exact requirements of the designers and architects running the project and delivered on time ready for the installations to begin.
K & D committed much of its workforce in many areas of our factory to ensure the project was a success. From the Surveyors right at the start, the buying department, sourcing the right materials, to the CAD technicians who created hundreds of drawings. The timber mill and CNC operatives, the bench joiners and spray shop team. The whole company was involved in one of our largest project to date.
The original was one of the world’s first retail promenades featuring independent purveyors catering to the discerning clientele of the Edwardian Age. Now following this historical refurbishment and renewal project with K & D Joinery as one of the lead companies involved, this stunning Grade II listed façade once again offers an iconic setting that exemplifies the quality and individuality of the new custodians of these beautiful buildings.
